Description
AI and machine learning are reshaping how the grid is planned, operated, and modernized — but most AI courses are written for software engineers, not for the people who actually work in energy. EE400 closes that gap.
Over twelve hours of self-paced video instruction, you’ll learn the AI and ML concepts that matter for utility and energy work, taught with examples drawn from real distribution planning, forecasting, and operations.
WHAT YOU WILL LEARN
– The core ideas behind modern AI and machine learning, explained without the math fog
– How supervised, unsupervised, and reinforcement learning each map to energy problems
– Practical use cases across load forecasting, DER integration, asset health, and grid operations
– How to evaluate AI claims critically and spot the difference between real capability and marketing
– How to use AI tools (ChatGPT, Claude, Copilot) as a working engineer — Understand and Verify, not blind trust
WHO THIS IS FOR
– Utility engineers and planners who want to add AI to their toolkit
– Energy professionals working in renewables, storage, or grid modernization
– Engineering managers who need to evaluate AI vendor pitches with confidence
– Anyone in the energy industry who wants a grounded, technical introduction to AI
PREREQUISITES
None. EE400 is the foundational course of the AI track. A general engineering or technical background helps but is not required. No prior coding experience needed.
FORMAT
– 12 hours of self-paced video instruction
– 4 modules covering AI fundamentals, ML methods, deep learning, and energy applications
– Embedded worked examples throughout (Understand and Verify methodology)
– 4 module quizzes plus a final exam
– 6 months of full course access from enrollment
– 90-day completion window for the exam
– Pass at 70%; performance level (Standard, Merit, Distinction) noted on internal transcript
ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR
Built and taught by a Senior DER Planning Engineer with direct experience in utility-scale renewables, distribution planning, and grid modernization. Every example in the course comes from real engineering work, not textbook hypotheticals.
CERTIFICATION
EE400 is the foundational course of both the Certified AI for Grid Professional (CAGP) and the Certified AI for Energy Professional (CAEP) tracks. Completing EE400 puts you on the path to either credential.
